Longhorns finish undefeated, win the inaugural Southwest Conference Championship,
Qualify for Nationals!
On March 24th, The University of Texas Men’s Rugby Team completed an undefeated 7-0 season by defeating the Rice Owls 36-26 in Houston and winning the inaugural Southwest Conference Championship. The win propels Texas into its first ever National Sweet 16, where they will face defending National Champion Davenport University on April 28th in Madison, WI.
The UT team is in the midst of one of the best runs in club history. Building upon the success of making the cup quarterfinals in their first CRC last year in Philadelphia, the club was able to recruit a promising freshman class. Coach Jacob Liberman was also able to convince contacts at the local Crossfit Central in Austin to develop a rugby-specific program, organized and run by strength and conditioning coach Michael Winchester, that has allowed this young Texas team to rapidly adjust to the size and speed of the collegiate game.
In a season highlighted by a revenge 44-10 victory of Texas State, who had knocked UT out of the national championship race the year prior, and a 113-0 road victory of the Baylor Bears, the most points scored by the Longhorns in the 26 year history of the program, the University of Texas was able to put 8 players onto the Southwest Conference first or second teams on the their way to the title. UT also participated in the inaugural National Championship Tournament for 7s in January, and are now preparing for the National 15s Tournament and a return to the CRC 7s in June.
