Atlanta Renegades Celebrating 40th Anniversary, Prepping For New South D-1 Season
The Atlanta Renegades are celebrating their 40th anniversary as a club this coming weekend, starting with a charity golf tournament on Friday benefitting Camp Twin Lakes, which provides programs for children with serious illnesses or other challenges, followed by a rugby match against Nashville RFC on Saturday and a banquet that evening. The Renegades are expecting well over 100 old boys to join the current members at the banquet, which will be held at RiRa Irish Pub, a sponsor of the Renegades and the charity golf tournament.
The Renegades Division 1 (“D-1”) side opened their season this past Saturday with a convincing 79-5 road win over Greenville RFC, a USA Rugby South (“South”) Division 2 (“D-2”) semifinalist last spring. After playing Nashville, another strong South D-2 side, this weekend, the Renegades will open their competitive D-1 season on October 15th against last year’s USA Rugby D-2 national champion, New Orleans RFC, at home on the Renegades new field at Silverbacks Stadium.
In addition to the Renegades and New Orleans, the South’s revamped D-1 competition will include Tampa Krewe RFC (South D-2 champions and runner-up finalist to New Orleans in the national D-2 championships last season), Charlotte and Boca Raton, with each team playing every other team twice in a home-and-away format.
